TRIZ community to meet at PESTA TRIZ 2014
The MyTRIZ sharing platform is taking a unique approach this year. The annual gathering of the TRIZ community aims to bring 200-250 practitioners together in a multi-event approach in 2014 – a conference, workshop, competition finals and community project over 4 days. This new chapter is branded as PESTA TRIZ. The event will feature 10 renowned international and local speakers who will share their learnings on solving inventive problems and ways to implement sustainable solutions.

The PESTA TRIZ is scheduled from 11-14 November 2014 hosted by Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) Northern Region Office at Kepala Batas, Penang. The event fee is RM 300 per person for all events and the registration is now open for sign up at www.mytriz.com.my.  More information is available in the PESTA TRIZ 2014 brochure.

A total of 76 local and regional university teams have entered the MyTRIZ Competition 2014.  This is an increase of 7% over last year’s participation. The growing interest is expected to make the competition this year even tougher. The teams are now preparing their proposals, which are due by 31 August 2014.  Only eight teams will make the Finals on 13 November 2014. This competition will set the standard for TRIZ excellence in Malaysia and Asia region.

Join us to celebrate the success of Dr Tan Wee Hoe from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), Dr Yip Mun Wai, Tan Yong Li and Yen Foo Soon from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TARUC) and Dr Kwong Kae Hsiang and team from Recogine Sdn. Bhd. for achieving the highest gold medal awards at the recent ITEX 2014. ITEX stands for International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition is an international platform for inventors and research scientists to present their innovations to the business community. It has been organized by Malaysian Inventor and Designs Society (MINDS) annually since 1989.

Dr Tan showcased his project on TRIZ Based Inventive Principle Interactive Game for Children. Dr Yip, Yong Li and Foo Soon displayed their enhanced Exoskeleton Suite, which won the MyTRIZ Competition 2012, while Dr Kwong and team demonstrated the RecoWave, a Highway Information System based on an intelligent vision technology. The Recogine innovation was acknowledged as the best of the Best Invention Award for Corporate Category.

As for the KDU Penang team, the MyTRIZ Competition last year motivated two mentors, Shahrizat Shaik Mohamed and Dr Yeap Gik Hong to expose their students to international competitions. Their efforts were rewarded when two teams were shortlisted for the 4th Global Competition on Systematic Innovation (GCSI) 2014 at San Jose State University, California on 16-18 July.

Lee Rou Ling and Vellatchi Hema presented their projects on Inpatient Electronic Health Monitoring System and Automated Physiotherapy Device for Knee Rehabilitation respectively. They were among the top 16 teams at the GCSI Finals and were recognized with the Honorable Mention Awards. It was a great experience for the students as they were competing with professors, inventors and patent holders. Kudos to the KDU Penang teams!

They say that good things always come in threes - this is very true for MyTRIZ. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, MPC and MyTRIZ joined force to present a paper on “TRIZ Development Framework for Malaysian SME” at the 5th Global TRIZ Conference (GTC) organized by Korean Academics TRIZ Association (KATA) from 8-10 July 2014.
The paper highlighted the innovative culture of Malaysian industries, exposing the SMEs to new tools to increase the level of innovation and implementing a comprehensive innovative framework to achieve more with limited resources. The presentation received the Excellence Paper Award. Thanks go to Prof Dr Nooh Abu Bakar, Zulhasni Abdul Rahim, Cik Sarimah Misman, Dr TS Yeoh and Eng Hoo for the great achievement.

MyTRIZ was invited to provide their insights into the innovation landscape in Malaysia at the Asian Society of Innovation and Policy Conference from 4-6 August 2014. The topic of making systematic innovation happen in Malaysia was shared with the Asian delegates.  Thanks to Prof. Dr. Sung-Soo Seol, Korea Hannam University, Dr. Mohan Avvari, Nottingham University and Dr. Kamarulzaman Aziz, Multimedia University for giving MyTRIZ the opportunity to share the progress.

MPC has long taken the challenge of encouraging local companies to improve their productivity and enhance their innovation ability. Since stepping on board the TRIZ bandwagon, MPC has been making tremendous in-roads in proliferation of the TRIZ knowledge. The TRIZ journey continued when MPC collaborated with 4 companies namely, MODENAS, INOKOM, Malaysian NPK Fertilizer and MATTEL, and inked Memorandum of Understanding on 5 May 2014 to commerce the learning.

By many measures, the TRIZ proliferation in Malaysia is a resounding success, but the knowledge and skills have only touched a small proportion of the country. In order to achieve a sustainable innovation system, the proliferation must reach out to more people. Motivated by the recent successes, the promotion of TRIZ continues across the country.

Through the cooperation with Multimedia Development Corporation, three TRIZ sharing sessions were conducted through the MyProCert Roadshow in Penang on 2-30 April, Cyberjaya on 26-27 May and Kuching on 8-9 July.  Any sharing about TRIZ never fails to ignite the interest to learn the subject, as seen by the overwhelming responses by the East Malaysians. MyTRIZ needs to find a way to develop more experts across the country to satisfy the craving for the secret of TRIZ.

There is a growing interest in learning the subject. However, with limited local experts to conduct training and international support engagement is expensive, MyTRIZ has accelerated the development of Level 3 practitioners. 34 lecturers pioneered the first ever of TRIZ Level 3 class in Malaysia outside of Intel. In 3 modules spanning 10 days, these lecturers went deeper into the methodology and learnt the advanced techniques.

The pioneer batch is expected to graduate by end of August 2014.  The MATRIZ certification is lined up next for them in 2015. Majority of participants are senior academicians who have allocated their precious time to attend the classes. It was not easy to balance between work and assignments. Thanks to Dr TS Yeoh for facilitation and training them.

MyTRIZ hopes to meet up with the TRIZ Community at the PESTA TRIZ 2014 events. Do sign up to attend. Together we can build the next chapter of TRIZ journey.

Dr. TS Yeoh
MyTRIZ President
